The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe

EDGAR ALLAN POE HAUNTING THE REX

Just in time for Halloween, “The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe” can be seen at the Rex Theatre in Galax on Saturday, October 25, at 8:00 pm. The performance will include “The Bells”, “The Raven”, and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, interwoven with biographical information about Poe. Admission is $5.

Poe is played by Paul Hodges, an actor, poet, author, and song writer. Hodges has gained a modicum of fame for his acting and writing. He played Robert Jones, one of the founders of Galax, in the play "Jewel of the Blue Ridge," in the Rex a few years ago. He has appeared in "The Waterless Sea," with Terri Ingalls and in "A Country Courtship," with Peter and Christina Holland, at several venues in North Carolina and Virginia. He has had leading roles in a dozen or more plays at The Andy Griffith Theatre in Mount Airy. In addition to the Poe show, he has several other one-man shows, most notably "A Mighty Current: The Life and Times of Bobby Kennedy."

This theater experience is sponsored, in part, by The Arts & Cultural Council of the Twin Counties, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the arts in the Twin Counties. For more information, call (276) 238-1217. Tickets are available at the door.

Shakespearean Acting Classes Offered for Children

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in downtown Galax welcomes back acting instructor Linda Donnell who will teach "Shakespeare for Children." The class will meet every Monday for six weeks from 5:00-6:00pm from October 20-November 24 for ages 8-12.
Students will learn many aspects of Shakespearean theater including dances of the Elizabethan Era, speaking sonnets, voice training and theater games. It will be age appropriate and very active.
Conservatory owner and artistic director Dr. Barbara Johnson has known Donnell for many years and feels she is a wonderful asset. "Her talents in the performing arts enhance our programs at the Conservatory," Johnson said. "Children in the area have this rare opportunity to learn Shakespearean acting and voice training which will enrich their cultural development."
As an actor and dancer, Donnell brings with her a diverse background. She received her early dance training at the Ellis DuBoulay School of Ballet in Chicago and also studied ballet and modern dance at Wake Forest University and the NC School of the Arts.
Donnell has trained under some of the finest theater artists in the US and from abroad. While at the NC School of the Arts, she studied acting with Yuri Belov and circus with Dikki Ellis of New York City's Big Apple Circus. She also trained in acting, voice, Shakespeare, movement and mime under British Professor Emeritus James Dodding.
As an actor, Donnell has performed at the Cherry Orchard Theatre in Ararat VA, the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem NC, Wake Forest University, the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy NC and the Renaissance Theatre Company in High Point NC.
She is ardent about teaching and has been sharing her love of acting and dance for almost 20 years. "I have a passion for acting and a love of children," Donnell said. "I am delighted to have this opportunity to teach again at the Conservatory."
The cost for the classes is $75 per child. Space is limited. To register or for more information, call the Conservatory at 276-236-2105.
