Grayson County, Carroll County, Galax VA Business Advertising

The Grayson Carroll Galax VA Directory is now offering advertising for area businesses at very affordable rates.
Area businesses are already included in the basic listings of the Directory, but additional exposure can be obtained by a more visible ad placed in the "Sponsors" column of the pages.
If you do not have a website for your business, we will do a custom page for you at a very affordable price.

Many of the business owners in the area have a misconception of the Internet, how people find the businesses, and what is needed to benefit from Internet exposure. Many consider a listing on Yahoo Local, Google Local, or the Manta, Yelp. MerchantCircle, or the myriad Yellow Page directories as having their own website. This isn't the same thing as the listings in these directories are very similar to the basic listings in the Grayson Carroll Galax VA Directory. They pretty much give business name, address, and phone number and that's about all unless you have "claimed" your business and added a few more details.
Using the web to promote your business isn't really too difficult, there are just better methods than others.

The object of advertising on the Grayson Carroll Galax VA Directory is to make your business stand out from the crowd. And if we do a custom page for you, the link in the search engine results will take potential customers to your page where you can showcase your business in more detail.

If you would like to learn a little more about how search engines work and how to decide which local advertising media to choose to spend your advertising dollars with, visit our Search Engine Presentation. It's in PDF format so Adobe Reader or another PDF reader will be necessary to view the presentation.

Galax, Va 24333

For Immediate Release
Laura A. Bryant, Director November 5, 2008

70th Anniversary Celebration

This year marks the 70th year of Library service by the Galax Public Library. To recognize this achievement, there will be an open house at the Library on West Stuart Drive on Sunday, November 16th from 3 to 5pm. Refreshments will be provided by the Galax Book Club.

A short program will begin at 3:30 featuring a performance by the Joy Bell Ringers of the First Baptist Church of Galax in the main library.

The first library in Galax began through the efforts of the Galax Business & Professional Women’s Club and was located in one room of the Town’s [Galax was not yet a city] offices upstairs in what now is the location of Galax Social Services. In 1956, the Library moved to the upstairs of the Appalachian Power Building – formerly the Maplemoor Dairy building. In 1974 the remodeled home of B. C. Vaughan became the location of the books and services of the library until 2001 when the present building was opened.

Everyone is invited to attend this event – It is your library – help us celebrate.

The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe

EDGAR ALLAN POE HAUNTING THE REX

Just in time for Halloween, “The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe” can be seen at the Rex Theatre in Galax on Saturday, October 25, at 8:00 pm. The performance will include “The Bells”, “The Raven”, and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, interwoven with biographical information about Poe. Admission is $5.

Poe is played by Paul Hodges, an actor, poet, author, and song writer. Hodges has gained a modicum of fame for his acting and writing. He played Robert Jones, one of the founders of Galax, in the play "Jewel of the Blue Ridge," in the Rex a few years ago. He has appeared in "The Waterless Sea," with Terri Ingalls and in "A Country Courtship," with Peter and Christina Holland, at several venues in North Carolina and Virginia. He has had leading roles in a dozen or more plays at The Andy Griffith Theatre in Mount Airy. In addition to the Poe show, he has several other one-man shows, most notably "A Mighty Current: The Life and Times of Bobby Kennedy."

This theater experience is sponsored, in part, by The Arts & Cultural Council of the Twin Counties, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the arts in the Twin Counties. For more information, call (276) 238-1217. Tickets are available at the door.

Conservatory of Dance & Theatre Acting Classes

Shakespearean Acting Classes Offered for Children

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in downtown Galax welcomes back acting instructor Linda Donnell who will teach "Shakespeare for Children." The class will meet every Monday for six weeks from 5:00-6:00pm from October 20-November 24 for ages 8-12.
Students will learn many aspects of Shakespearean theater including dances of the Elizabethan Era, speaking sonnets, voice training and theater games. It will be age appropriate and very active.
Conservatory owner and artistic director Dr. Barbara Johnson has known Donnell for many years and feels she is a wonderful asset. "Her talents in the performing arts enhance our programs at the Conservatory," Johnson said. "Children in the area have this rare opportunity to learn Shakespearean acting and voice training which will enrich their cultural development."
As an actor and dancer, Donnell brings with her a diverse background. She received her early dance training at the Ellis DuBoulay School of Ballet in Chicago and also studied ballet and modern dance at Wake Forest University and the NC School of the Arts.
Donnell has trained under some of the finest theater artists in the US and from abroad. While at the NC School of the Arts, she studied acting with Yuri Belov and circus with Dikki Ellis of New York City's Big Apple Circus. She also trained in acting, voice, Shakespeare, movement and mime under British Professor Emeritus James Dodding.
As an actor, Donnell has performed at the Cherry Orchard Theatre in Ararat VA, the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem NC, Wake Forest University, the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy NC and the Renaissance Theatre Company in High Point NC.
She is ardent about teaching and has been sharing her love of acting and dance for almost 20 years. "I have a passion for acting and a love of children," Donnell said. "I am delighted to have this opportunity to teach again at the Conservatory."
The cost for the classes is $75 per child. Space is limited. To register or for more information, call the Conservatory at 276-236-2105.
The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre is located at 119 W Grayson Street in Downtown Galax. Entrance is in the back under the covered porch.

Fries VA Thursday Night Jam Sessions

The Fries VA Thursday night "Pickin' and Grinnin' " jam sessions are moving again - this time to their permanent home.

After an explosion in December 2007 wrecked the New River Trail Cafe where the jams were held, the sessions were relocated to Big Daddy's Restaurant in Fries. Although Big Daddy's has been very hospitable and accomodating, a little larger area was needed to provide enough space for all the musicians and listeners.

When Shaylyn's Stretch-a-Dollar closed, a group of local investors purchased the building. After meetings and discussions with the local musicians, and much planning, it was decided by the new owners to provide a home for the music that is so much a part of the Fries, Grayson County, and Carroll County heritage.

While having to start with few amenities, improvements to the music room, and the remaining portion of the building, are in sight. Planned additions include a stage, and possibly lighting and a sound system for the musicians.

Refreshments will be limited to coffee, soft drinks, and pre-packaged snacks in the beginning. Future plans hope to include a short order cafe with hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and ice cream.

The "Jam Sessions in Fries" will move to its new home in the former Shaylyn's Stretch-a-Dollar building at 472 W. Main Street on Thursday, July 3. Jams will begin at 6:30PM and go until "they decide to go home".

Everyone is welcome to come and join in whether just starting to play or an experienced musician. If you don't play, but enjoy listening to the area's traditional music and the fellowship and camaraderie that goes along with it, come on out and visit the "Jam Sessions in Fries" at its new home.

Admission as always is free, but donations will be appreciated.

Chestnut Creek School of the Arts Storytelling Workshop

Chestnut Creek School of the Arts is poised to have a positive economic impact on our community. But it won't happen without your help. Please help us by taking the classes, spreading the word or giving generously. If classes are canceled, it is difficult to enlist the instructor again. Paul Hodges is conducting a two hour storytelling workshop as part of Leaf & String for Chestnut Creek School of the Arts. We must have at least ten students for this workshop to take place and have only one student registered as of today. Also, Paul wants at least one week’s notice to “call” the class- this means next Friday, June 6. Help!

Story telling with Paul Hodges, June 14 1-3pm
Introduction to various types of storytelling, with examples of different styles, subject matter, and themes. Everyone has interesting stories to tell. Gain skill and confidence in telling yours.
